Feelings are Temporary: 3 Tips for Dealing with Sadness

Sadness is a normal human emotion. Though the cause may be entirely unique, the feeling itself is common. We all feel sad at some point in our lives. Sometimes we are able to identify an emotional trigger for why we feel the way we do, while other times our sadness seems inexplicable. When you are feeling sad, here are 3 tips I’ve found helpful to deal with it’s difficulties.

1. Be outdoors.

Walk. Workout. Whatever. Take a deep breath. Get outside and be involved with the beauty that surrounds us everyday that we often take for granted.

2. Eat good food.

Forget about the calories. Eat what satisfies you.

3. Communicate.

Talk to people that genuinely make you happy. Phone call. Text. Communicate with the people who make you laugh. Who make you feel loved and heard. The ones who leave you with a smile on your face. Communicate as much as you possibly can.

It’s important to remember that we are all complex beings filled emotions that change just as easy as the weather. Be mindful that feelings and emotions, just like the weather, are not permanent. No matter how long a storm may last, eventually it will end. The dark clouds with part and the beautiful blue sky that was there all along will be present once again.

These are just 3 things that help me. I hope this helps you too and if you have any other thoughts on how to help with sadness please feel free to share. 😁

*Sadness is different than depression. Depression is an abnormal mental state that requires the attention of a professional. If you feel you are depressed, contact your doctor or call the National Helpline for Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services at 1-800-622-HELP*
